There are many types of ‘arthritis’. The two most commonly seen types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), with Rheumatoid Arthritis effecting 6.5 million in United Sates alone. Rheumatoid Arthritis is unlike Osteoarthritis where the patients experiences the growth of bone spurs and lose of cartilage particles.

RA is usually thought of as being an ‘old persons disease’ unfortunately the disease is found through the generations, even in young children. Probably the first noticeable sign of RA is stiffness in the mornings for no apparent reason. RA is an inflammatory joint disease and is severe. It is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks its own tissues causing damage to the joints and surrounding soft tissue.

If you are experiencing stiffness in the joints and haven’t been involved in any unusual exercise it would be wise to visit your doctor for further investigation. It is in your best interest to immediately consult a doctor as soon as you have pain in the joints. Don’t wait for other symptoms appear. Also, you should never try treating the disease by taking over the counter medicines. Chances are that you may aggravate the ailment.

Physical therapy and an exercise program are helpful for patients with osteoarthritis to maintain a satisfactory level of activity. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids are provided for short-term relief.

Here in the West, for chronic inflammatory arthritis doctors tend to prescribe ant-inflammatory drugs. Long-term effect of the use of these drugs can be a problem in themselves such as causing stomach irritation and ulcers. Over the years many have been taken off the market due to the development of heart conditions.

Traditional Chinese medicine uses time-tested herbal formulas to combat the condition. Scientifically proving the validity of these formulas is yet to be verified but appear very promising. Joint Strength (Du Huo Sheng Wan) has been used since the Tang Dynasty, about 1200 years. It contains pain-relieving herbs combined with herbs to nourish and strengthen the joints. Millions of people over a millennium have proven there are no worrying side effects with this formula and can be taken over a long period of time.

Combining the best of traditional Chinese medicine and conventional Western medicine can aid improvement in your condition.

Besides seeking a doctor’s advice early, general precautions like protecting the affected areas from stress of exertion is recommended. Any joint can be affected including those in the spine. Mostly the disease targets hips, feet, fingers and knees. You should also try to reduce your weight if you are carrying extra weight. This will make a huge difference to the wear and tear on your joints and will give you much relief.

Also, contact your physiotherapist. Seek his or her advice about certain kind of exercises that may be specific to your kind of rheumatoid arthritis and take these exercises regularly as per the expert’s advice. Always consult with your doctor first.
